San Rafael, Calif. -- October 21, 1998 -- Lucas Learning Ltd. today
announced the debut of its first software title, Star Wars
DroidWorks. Lucas Learning has created an "uncommon learning
experience," an alternative to traditional skill-based drills and
rote memorization. Star Wars DroidWorks provides a
fun environment for players to investigate different scientific
principles while assuming the role of an undercover agent working
for the Rebel Alliance.
Star Wars DroidWorks based on the planet Tattooine,
features animated cut-scenes and movie clips from Star Wars
the feature film. Disguised as a Jawa, players become a Master Droid
Builder by designing and building their own droids from 87 different
robotic parts and then sending them on and completing 29 missions.
A holographic design grid allows for 360-degree 3D viewing, allowing
players to construct, customize, and test their droids. Millions
of droid combinations are possible.
Lucas Learning products are based on the philosophy that people
need to be given a chance to investigate, create and make their
own choices rather than just sit back and wait for instruction.
George Lucas states, "Children are naturally curious, self-motivated
learners. That capability is still within us all. If you provide
the right tools in an interesting environment, people will create
their own path to discovery.
The Star Wars universe, with its rich storyline and engaging
characters, is a natural starting point for Lucas Learning's first
title. Star Wars DroidWorks provides a fun environment
for players to investigate and apply the principles of energy, force
and motion, and light and magnetism. Jane Boston, General Manager
of Lucas Learning states, "We dare you to be smart. We want you
to learn from experience. With our products, people learn by doing
and by experiencing the consequences of their own decisions. After
all, that is what real-life learning is all about."
