Curriculum Connection: "Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes." NCTE/IRA Standards for the English Language Arts Lesson Plan (Grades 1-2): Use Race at Theeds in Yoda's Challenge as starting point for writing factual accounts. In a large group, have students share what they know about reporters and interviews. • How are events usually described in news stories? • What information usually comes first in a news story? Have your students play a game of Race at Theeds. Ask them to take notes on or draw a chart of their course, so that they can report on it later. Tell students that they are going to create a factual report of a race at Theeds. Assign students to work with a partner, and one person should take the role of Jar Jar or Queen Amidala, while the other takes the role of the reporter. Have them start the story with the most important information by reporting the winner. Next, they should include a statement from the character about a choice they made during the race.
Encourage the partners to review each other's work, and give feedback. When the work is finished, assemble the students' work on a bulletin board or in a newsletter format. |
