Representing Numbers With Star Wars® Yoda's Challenge™

Curriculum Connection: "In pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2, all students should model situations that involve the addition and subtraction of whole numbers, using objects, pictures, and symbols." Principles and Standards for School Mathematics

Lesson Plan (Grades 1-2):

Have your students play Trap Droids in Yoda's Challenge with a partner or in a group. In the game, Yoda points out that the pictured droids show how many they need to trap. Emphasize the connection between these pictures and the number. While the team or group is playing, point out that each time they trap a droid, this change will be indicated at the bottom of the screen.

When all students have had a chance to play Trap Droids, ask the class what else they could represent with pictures. Make a list together.

Example --
• A jar of marbles
• Cookies on a plate
• Friends on the monkey bars

Ask the students what would happen if one friend got off the monkey bars, or someone ate one of the cookies on the plate. How would they change the picture? Explain that this is subtraction.

Now ask, "What if two more friends got on the monkey bars, or someone put more cookies on the plate?" Discuss ways they could show that these are new friends or cookies. Explain that this is addition.

Assign students to come up with a plan for a chart of their own. Their problem should show subtraction of objects. Have them represent the chart as a numerical equation as well.

Example -- 5 - 1 = 4

Give the students chart paper and art materials. After they have created and illustrated the chart, have them present their work to the class. While they are presenting, make a list of the math problems they have created. You can use these problems for math practice exercises.
